Indoor Plants that Clean the Air at Home

Living in an urban environment, like Quezon City, means exposure to various pollutants that can linger in the air and subtly affect health. Last night, in the news, a landfill fire in Rodriguez, Rizal was filling the air in Quezon City with toxic smog. It even reached the nooks and crannies of our kitchen.

But nature provides an elegant solution: indoor plants that detoxify both the air and your well-being. The Philippines, blessed with biodiversity, offers a variety of indoor plants that not only purify the air but also carry medicinal and wellness benefits.

Photo by Erika Osberg on Unsplash.

1. Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)

One of the easiest plants to care for, the snake plant is a powerful air purifier. Studies have shown that it absorbs toxins like formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon dioxide, making it a great indoor companion. Besides air purification, snake plants are believed to promote better sleep by releasing oxygen at night, making them ideal for bedrooms.

2. Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis miller)

Widely known for its healing properties, aloe vera not only filters toxins like benzene and formaldehyde but also detoxifies the body when consumed in moderation. Prevents baldness, too, according to my grandma. The gel inside its leaves is rich in antioxidants and vitamins, aiding digestion, soothing burns, and enhancing skin and hair health. A small pot near the kitchen can serve both aesthetic and medicinal purposes.

3. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

An elegant and low-maintenance plant, the peace lily is exceptional at removing air pollutants such as ammonia, benzene, and formaldehyde. The plant thrives in low light and brings a calming presence to any room. Additionally, its ability to improve indoor humidity levels aids respiratory health, reducing dry throats and irritated sinuses.

4. Bamboo Palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii)

If you want a tropical vibe indoors, the bamboo palm is a great choice. It’s not just aesthetically pleasing; it excels at removing airborne toxins while increasing humidity in a room, which can help prevent dry skin and respiratory discomfort. Some Filipino households also use parts of the plant in traditional herbal medicine.

5. Ferns (Nephrolepis exaltata)

Boston ferns are particularly effective at removing formaldehyde and xylene from the air. They also act as natural humidifiers, which helps alleviate symptoms of dry skin and respiratory irritation. Ferns require a bit more maintenance, but their lush greenery makes a space feel fresh and vibrant.

6. Herbal Indoor Plants (Oregano & Pandan)

Oregano (Origanum vulgare) and pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius) are not only wonderful culinary additions but also known for their health-boosting properties. Oregano has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects when consumed, while pandan is widely used in teas and detox drinks to aid digestion and improve circulation. Keeping these in small pots indoors allows easy access to their natural health benefits.

Final Thoughts

Indoor plants are more than decorative elements—they are silent healers that cleanse your environment and contribute to your overall well-being. Whether purifying the air, providing medicinal benefits, or promoting mental relaxation, these Philippine-native and tropical plants offer a holistic approach to home detoxification. A little greenery goes a long way in creating a healthier, fresher, and more vibrant living space. So why not start your own indoor garden today for your HousePinoy?

Why Squats Make You Better Off Staying at Home than Walking Outdoors

Lots of Pinoy homebodies miss this opportunity. Regular brisk walks and jogging are good but regular squats are something else. If you're the kind that loves to simply and quietly enjoy your housepinoy all day, squats are ideal for you.

Squats are one of the most effective and accessible exercises, offering a wide range of benefits that extend beyond physical fitness. Whether you work from home, stay at home, or are retired, incorporating squats into your daily routine multiple times a day can significantly enhance your physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental health.

Photo by Vitaly Gariev on Unsplash.

Physical Benefits of Squats

It's obvious. Squats engage multiple muscle groups, making them a powerful full-body workout. They primarily strengthen the legs, glutes, and core, improving mobility, stability, and posture. If you don't want to look old and frail (or uugod-ugod na), doing squats is your key. By regularly performing squats, individuals enhance their bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis—especially important for those who are aging or spending long hours sitting. Or even for the young. I see a lot of young but frail people around.

Since squats improve circulation, they help prevent conditions like varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis, which can result from prolonged sitting. Additionally, they enhance balance and flexibility, making daily movements—such as standing up from a chair or bending down to pick up objects—more fluid and effortless. My martial art kicking skill and movement speed are greatly enhanced by squats.

Squats also burn calories and support weight management, particularly when performed with intensity. They boost metabolism, which helps with maintaining a healthy body composition. Furthermore, regular squatting reduces the risk of knee and hip injuries by strengthening the joints and muscles around these critical areas. This is why squats are better than walking outdoors where you are prone to road accidents, road rage and clumsy drivers (or kulangot riders). Do squats at home in early mornings or early evenings.

Emotional Benefits of Squats

Exercise, including squats, triggers the release of endorphins, the brain’s "feel-good" chemicals, which alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression. Many people who spend long hours indoors may feel isolated or experience emotional stagnation, but incorporating physical movement like squats can create a sense of vitality and well-being.

Since squats improve blood flow and oxygenation, they enhance mood and energy levels, counteracting fatigue and sluggishness that often come from a sedentary lifestyle. They also promote self-confidence, as regular movement builds physical strength and endurance, leading to an empowered mindset.

Spiritual Benefits of Squats

Ever tried doing squats with GOD? I talk with him and glance at my memory verses (printed on cards) while doing squats and it makes feel extra better spiritually. Not that I rely on good emotions, but I take advantage of them. And why not?

Although squats may seem like a purely physical exercise, they can also be an intentional practice of mindfulness and grounding. Moving with awareness strengthens the connection between the body and mind, encouraging a greater appreciation for movement and life itself.

For individuals practicing meditation, prayer, or deep breathing, squats can serve as a moment of reflection and self-care. Each squat can be approached as a symbol of renewal, helping individuals release negative energy while embracing discipline and growth.

Additionally, integrating squats into a daily routine with intention creates a ritual that fosters gratitude, strength, and perseverance—qualities that contribute to spiritual well-being.

Mental Benefits of Squats

Squats enhance cognitive function and mental clarity by increasing blood circulation to the brain. This results in improved focus, memory, and decision-making. Regular exercise has also been linked to neurogenesis, the growth of new brain cells, which supports mental agility.

For those who work or stay at home, squatting several times a day acts as a natural brain boost, counteracting mental fatigue. It can be used as a productive break between work tasks, improving motivation and efficiency.

By integrating squats into daily life, individuals can enjoy holistic benefits, transforming their well-being physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally while embracing an active lifestyle from the comfort of their home.

Turning a Pinoy Home into a Magnet for Blessings, Safety, Favor, and Prosperity

A Pinoy home is more than just a physical space—it’s an environment that shapes your thoughts, emotions, and energy---which is what a traditional Pinoy home should be, according to our grandparents. I remember hearing old people say that the home has an aura of mystical protection from evil and a home made functional with faithfulness invites favor. It’s a sanctuary where you recharge, dream, and manifest the life you desire. With intentional actions, your home can be a magnet for blessings, safety, favor, and even financial prosperity.

Cultivating a Positive Atmosphere

The energy within your home plays a crucial role in attracting goodness into your life. A space filled with gratitude, kindness, and faith naturally draws blessings. Start by speaking affirmations over your home—words of abundance, peace, and favor. Decorating with inspiring elements like uplifting quotes, peaceful colors, and symbols of prosperity also enhances the atmosphere.

Safety Through Mindfulness and Protection

A safe home is both physically secure and emotionally comforting. Secure doors and windows, use reliable locks, and ensure that alarms and emergency systems are functional. Beyond physical safety, fostering emotional security is just as important. A peaceful home, free from conflict and stress, nurtures well-being and strengthens relationships among those who live in it.

Attracting Favor and Goodwill

A home that welcomes guests with warmth and generosity is one that attracts favor. Whether it’s hosting friends, helping neighbors, or simply maintaining an inviting atmosphere, kindness creates ripple effects. When you share what you have—whether it’s food, time, or a helping hand—you open the doors for reciprocal generosity and goodwill from others.

Creating a Space for Financial Prosperity

A well-organized and energetically balanced home invites financial prosperity. Cluttered spaces can block the flow of abundance, while a clean and orderly environment fosters productivity and clear thinking. Designate areas that inspire creativity and financial planning, such as a workspace or a vision board corner. Additionally, positioning symbols of prosperity—like plants, water features, or images of abundance—can subtly reinforce the idea of wealth flowing into your life.

The Power of Gratitude and Prayer

Practicing gratitude and prayer within your home solidifies its status as a blessing magnet. Expressing appreciation for what you already have—your shelter, food, relationships—creates an atmosphere of abundance. Prayer or meditation enhances peace and attracts divine favor, making your home a spiritually enriching space.

A home designed with intentionality transforms into more than just a structure—it becomes a force that continuously welcomes blessings, safety, favor, and financial abundance into your life. By fostering gratitude, embracing generosity, maintaining security, and keeping a positive mindset, you set the stage for a flourishing future. Your home reflects your heart, and when that heart radiates positivity, everything else follows.

Would you like tips on organizing your space for better energy flow or creating a vision board for financial goals? I’d love to help!

HousePinoy Backyard Plants that Help Cool Down Your Surroundings

They say it's going to be lots hotter in the middle of April and in May. Though it's too late to start planting trees and plants to cool down your surroundings at home now, it will be smart to start planting them today to prepare for the next hot summers in the coming years. I'm sure there are more to come.

Photo by Agus Karta on Unsplash.

If you're looking to create a cooler environment around your home this summer, certain backyard plants can help regulate temperature and provide much-needed shade. Here are some great options for the Philippine climate:

1. Fast-Growing Shade Trees

Gmelina Arborea – This tree grows quickly and provides a thick canopy, making it ideal for cooling outdoor spaces.

Rain Tree (Samanea saman) – Known for its wide-spreading branches, this tree offers excellent shade and helps reduce heat absorption.

Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) – Though it takes longer to mature, mahogany trees provide dense shade and contribute to a cooler environment.

 2. Large-Leafed Plants for Cooling

Giant Taro (Alocasia macrorrhizos) – Its massive leaves help block direct sunlight and create a refreshing atmosphere.

Pandan Plant – Aside from its culinary uses, pandan plants add greenery and help cool the surroundings.

3. Ferns and Ground Cover

Bird’s Nest Fern (Dapo) – Thrives in shaded areas and helps maintain moisture in the air.

Peanut Plant – A fast-growing ground cover that prevents soil from overheating and retains moisture.

 4. Decorative Cooling Plants

Bromeliads – Their broad leaves help absorb heat while adding vibrant colors to your garden.

Garden Croton – Provides shade and enhances the aesthetic appeal of your backyard.

5. Vertical and Hanging Plants

Buhok ni Esther – A hanging plant that adds greenery while reducing heat absorption on walls and fences.

Schefflera – Works well as a border plant, offering shade and cooling effects.

By incorporating these plants into your backyard, you can create a natural cooling system that helps lower temperatures while enhancing the beauty of your outdoor space. Would you like recommendations on how to arrange them for maximum cooling effect?

Avocado Seed and Your Unbearable Joint Pains

Avocado seeds, often discarded as waste, are rich in antioxidants and bioactive compounds that may help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. When fermented in olive oil or rubbing alcohol, these seeds can create a potent topical remedy. Olive oil itself is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making this combination a promising natural treatment. Keeping a jar of this massaging potion in every HousePinoy is recommended.

Photo by Kelly Sikkema on Unsplash.

Benefits of Avocado Seed Fermented in Olive Oil (or Alcohol)

The bioactive compounds in avocado seeds, such as flavonoids and phenolic acids, have been shown to combat oxidative stress and inflammation. Olive oil, rich in monounsaturated fats and antioxidants like vitamin E, enhances the absorption of these compounds and provides additional anti-inflammatory benefits. Together, they may help soothe joint pain, muscle aches, and skin inflammation.

How to Make the Potion

1. Prepare the Seeds: Eat the avocado fruit. Make sure you enjoy it. Set aside the seed. Clean and dry them thoroughly. Once dry, slice, grate or grind them into small pieces.
2. Combine with Olive Oil (or rubbing alcohol): Place the grated avocado seeds in a glass jar and cover them with high-quality extra virgin olive oil or rubbing alcohol. Ensure the seeds are fully submerged.
3. Fermentation Process: Seal the jar tightly and store it in a cool, dark place for about 2-4 weeks. Shake the jar occasionally to mix the contents and promote fermentation.
4. Strain and Store: After fermentation, strain the mixture to remove the seed particles. Transfer the infused oil to a clean container for storage.

You want to use rubbing alcohol instead of costly olive oil? Watch this video here.

Application

To use, apply a small amount of the infused oil or alcohol to the affected area and massage gently. This remedy can be used for joint pain, muscle soreness, or skin inflammation. Always perform a patch test before full application to ensure no allergic reactions occur.

While this natural remedy shows promise, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional before using it, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are pregnant. This ensures safety and effectiveness in addressing your specific needs. Remember, this is for topical use only.

What's in an Avocado Seed?

Avocado seeds, often overlooked, are packed with health-promoting compounds that make them a promising addition to wellness routines. These seeds are rich in antioxidants, including phenolic compounds, which combat oxidative stress and help reduce inflammation in the body. Antioxidants play a crucial role in preventing cell damage caused by free radicals, potentially lowering the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

Furthermore, avocado seeds are a source of soluble fiber, which supports digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements and improving gut microbiota. Healthy digestion contributes to better nutrient absorption and overall well-being. The bioactive compounds in avocado seeds may also have antimicrobial properties, helping to fight off harmful bacteria and fungi.

Some research suggests that these seeds could have potential in supporting weight management. Their fiber content can promote satiety, reducing the likelihood of overeating. Additionally, the compounds found in avocado seeds may aid in regulating blood sugar levels, making them beneficial for individuals with metabolic concerns.

While avocado seeds offer numerous potential health benefits, it is important to process and prepare them correctly to ensure safety and effectiveness. As with any health-related practice, consulting a healthcare professional before use is advisable.

Manage Your Stress by Drinking Water

I'm a water buff. Well, I'm a coffee lover and then a water buff because you need water to make coffee. Just kidding, though it's true. Anway, water is amazing. Its the most unassuming yet quintessential aspect of our daily lives—and holds a seemingly endless list of benefits. While it's often celebrated for keeping our bodies hydrated and maintaining vital physiological functions, water's power extends further, even into the realm of mental well-being. Its important if you want to keep sane in this crazy world. One lesser-known yet incredibly important aspect is how drinking water can help reduce stress.

Stress, whether caused by your job, neighbor, slow internet, money problems or significant life events, is an omnipresent element of modern living. When stressed, our bodies initiate a "fight or flight" response, releasing cortisol and adrenaline. While these hormones can be useful in short bursts, chronic stress leads to an array of health problems— from mental exhaustion to cardiovascular issues. Surprisingly, the simple act of drinking water can be a game-changer in managing and mitigating stress. At first I couldn't believe it, but it's true.

Water Magic

Firstly, dehydration itself is a stressor. When your body lacks sufficient water, it places undue strain on various systems, particularly the cardiovascular and neurological ones. Dehydration can cause symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and cognitive impairment (you can't seem to remember your coffee brand), which compound feelings of stress. By ensuring adequate hydration, you support the body's natural equilibrium, reducing the physical manifestations of stress.

Additionally, the act of drinking water has a soothing effect. Sipping water can engage the parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the "rest and digest" system. This activation counters the stress-induced "fight or flight" response and promotes relaxation. Furthermore, the repetitive action of drinking water can have a meditative quality, serving as a moment of calm and mindfulness in an otherwise hectic day. Yeah. I sip water slowly like wine instead of taking it in one gulp. Gulp!

The brain, an organ heavily reliant on hydration, benefits significantly when adequately watered. Even mild dehydration can impair cognitive function and mood, leading to irritability and decreased concentration. So, if you feel like fighting somebody, drink water first. By keeping the brain well-hydrated, we can think more clearly, make better decisions, and maintain a more balanced emotional state—crucial factors in stress reduction.

Can You Cope Up?

Moreover, drinking water can serve as a healthy coping mechanism. When experiencing stress, people often turn to unhealthy habits, such as consuming caffeine (ouch) or alcohol. Opting for water instead not only avoids the negative impacts of these substances but also actively contributes to better hydration and stress management.

While drinking water might seem like a mundane daily task to some folks, its role in reducing stress is far from insignificant. By maintaining hydration, we support our body's physiological needs, promote relaxation, enhance cognitive function (so you finally remember your coffee brand), and provide a healthy alternative to other stress-related habits. So next time stress hits, consider reaching for a glass of water— it's a small act with substantial benefits for your mental well-being. Just drink.

PINEGLADES: Best Place to Settle in QC

If you have the money to invest on a classy real estate project, especially one located in a secure, accessible and very strategic (and flood-free) site in Quezon City, do so now with Pineglades Residences. Accessible through major thoroughfares and yet kindof secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city. The site is a well-planned, posh subdivision within a quiet and friendly community, GSIS Village, which in turn is nestled among the most preferred areas in the city, Project 8.

Pineglades is a classy community of 4-level attached townhouses epitomizing the smart and trendy concept of shared community living with each unit having its own lot. The floor plan on each level maximizes space without compromising aesthetics, comfort and functionality. The project includes high-toned amenities comparable to those of popular and highend condo units in the metropolis.

Floor plans and designs are suject to change without prior notice.

The best thing about this real estate project is its pre-selling stage. Ground breaking is on September 29, 2024 (Sunday), just 3 days from this writing. This is the best time to invest on a prime location while constructions are yet to commence or still underway because prices are still low. And there are even hefty discount incentives for those who will buy on groundbreaking day. If you are interested to witness the groundbreaking event and maybe consider getting a unit, or visit the place any day during these coming weeks, just email me at choysakg.res.agent@gmail.com. Or call me: 0927-166-5831

Make Money from Your Investment

You may opt to have your residence at Pineglades as an end user, or rent out your unit to make money from your investment. Since the location is strategic it will be easy to market your unit to business executives and owners who may be looking for a perfect place to live near their workplace or at least in Quezon City. The same with students from outside Metro Manila who can afford a townhouse unit to be nearer popular universities in Quezon City (or share it with fellow students). There are a good number of colleges and universities near Project 8, like AMA Computer College, STI, UP and Ateneo in Diliman, Quezon City University, MLQU near GMA 7, and MCU in Monumento, to name a few.

Pineglades in Project 8, QC is also near business and commercial centers like Centris, UP AyalaLand TechnoHub, West Avenue, EDSA, Roosevelt, SM North, and Trinoma to name a few. Hospitals like Metro North, Pacific Global, and Dr. Montano G. Ramos General Hospital, are all located along Mindanao Avenue which is a 10-minute drive from Pineglades. Not to mention Capitol Medical Center and MCU Hospital which are about 30 minutes away.

Get more project detail updates at the site on groundbreaking day and I will assist you with your inquiries and refer them with Metrostar Realty and Development representatives.

10 Advantages of Buying Real Estate in the Philippines During the Pre-Selling Period

Investing in real estate during the pre-selling period in the Philippines offers numerous benefits. Here are ten key advantages:

1. Lower Prices: One of the most significant advantages of buying pre-selling properties is the lower price. Developers often offer units at a discounted rate, sometimes up to 30-50% less than the price of a completed unit1. This makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

2. Flexible Payment Terms: Pre-selling properties usually come with more flexible payment schemes. Developers often provide various financing options, including lower down payments and extended payment terms, making it easier for buyers to manage their finances2.

3. First Pick of Units: Buying during the pre-selling stage allows buyers to choose the best units. Whether it’s a prime location within the development, a preferred floor level, or a unit with the best view, early buyers get the first pick1.

4. Potential for Higher Returns: As the property nears completion, its value typically increases. This means that buyers who purchase during the pre-selling period can potentially sell their units at a higher price, earning a significant profit3.

5. Customization Options: Some developers offer buyers the opportunity to customize their units during the pre-selling stage. This can include choosing finishes, layouts, and other design elements, allowing buyers to tailor their homes to their preferences2.

6. Modern Amenities: Pre-selling properties often come with modern amenities and facilities. Developers aim to attract buyers by offering features such as swimming pools, gyms, parks, and security systems, enhancing the overall living experience1.

7. Investment Opportunities: Pre-selling properties are an excellent investment option. With the potential for property value appreciation and rental income, buyers can generate a steady stream of revenue from their investments2.

8. Developer Incentives: To attract buyers, developers often offer various incentives during the pre-selling period. These can include discounts, freebies, and promotional offers, adding extra value to the purchase3.

9. Lower Maintenance Costs: New properties generally require less maintenance compared to older ones. Buying a pre-selling property means that buyers can enjoy lower maintenance costs in the initial years, as everything is brand new2.

10. Future-Proof Investment: Investing in a pre-selling property ensures that buyers are purchasing a modern, up-to-date unit. This future-proofs the investment, as the property will meet current standards and trends, making it more appealing to future buyers or renters1.

In conclusion, buying real estate during the pre-selling period in the Philippines offers numerous advantages, from lower prices and flexible payment terms to higher returns and modern amenities. It’s a strategic investment that can provide both immediate and long-term benefits.

Borrow as Many Jars to Fulfill Your Dreams

Every Pinoy has an ambitious dream, like helping less fortunate countrymen--not by just giving them jobs but enabling them to reach their dreams, too. What we all need is a job or business that makes us realize our dreams which give our lives meaning. Prosper and help others prosper, too. Cora, had that in her heart.

But what could she do? All she had was a car. Start a grab or taxi business? Food delivery?

She remembered the story of Elisha the prophet in the bible when he helped a prophet's widow make big money to pay off the big debt her husband left her. Yes, even anointed men of God can have unpaid big debts. Why? Because God has a plan, and often HE uses everyday problems to prove a point--like a big debt--because most times we think we know everything. Well, God loves surprises that demolish our belief paradigms.

So Elisha asked the widow what he had in her house. She said nothing but a small jar (other versions say "flask") of olive oil. Reader, what do you have in your housePinoy? Anyway, Elisha thought that a small jar of oil was enough. He told the widow to go around her neighborhood and borrow empty jars. The King James bible says "borrow" while other versions say "ask." Anyway, this gives us a good picture--she went around asking to borrow jars.

Elisha emphasized: "Don't borrow just a few." God wanted her to make big money.

Elisha told her to fill the borrowed jars with oil from the small jar she had. You know what? The oil in the small jar didn't run out. The widow and her children kept pouring oil into the empty jars. WOW! When all the jars were filled up the oil stopped flowing. Elisha told her to sell the jars of oil and use the money to pay off the debt. They could use the money left for themselves.

How much were they able to get from the sales? Must have been quite big, because the creditor was threatenting to take her two sons and make them his slaves if she failed to pay the debt. It was that big, costing two lives, and the sales from the oil paid it all off, and the excess money was big enough that Elisha said she and her sons could "live on what is left." I know what she probably thought. "I should have borrowed more jars." Here's the whole story.

Sometimes You Need to Borrow Jars

I read in a commentary somewhere that jars at the time were expensive because they were used to keep water and wine, among other things, and these were pricey commodities then. So she borrowed costly jars, and though it isn't mentioned in the bible, I know she returned those jars to their owners later--because they were borrowed.

See that? She needed to borrow jars. That was what the man of God thought God had wanted her to do. Sometimes we need to borrow something of great value in money to pursue what would keep us, not just debt free, but even prosperous. A lot of people won't believe that sometimes it is God's will for you to borrow money, and big sum of money at that.

Sometimes God would just directly provide you money to pay off something, like when Jesus told Peter that the first fish he'd catch carried in its mouth the money for paying off their temple tax. Sometimes God would tell you to do a livelihood, like Paul's tentmaking business. But sometimes, before you can do anything, God would first tell you to borrow something for a capital and use that to make money with something that has been in your possession.

Borrow something to make money with something you already have.

Refinancing Principle

After seeing this principle, Cora did just that. She had a car and used it as collateral to borrow money for re-financing. It was good that she found a loan company that just needed a copy of her OR/CR to use as collateral to borrow half a million. The loan company did not possess her car; it just needed her OR/CR and some documents.

With the loaned money, she started three food franchises and eventually was able to pay off her loan, continually making big extra profits with what remained. Later, she ventured on a franchise of a well-known fastfood chain and borrowed 2M for the purpose. This, too, she eventually settled and gained 4 profitable franchises in all. She hired people she later helped with refinancing using their secondhand vehicles as collateral so they could start their own dream businesses, too. She also started supporting charity work, church ministries and missions and sending select young people to colleges.

It's okay to borrow money, preferably from reputable financing and refinancing companies than from individuals, as long as you pay it back. It's not a sin, and it's not greed or worldliness. With God's wisdom and leading, it is shrewdness when dealing with lack-of-money matters. Why don't I prefer borrowing from individuals? Because of being indebted to them eternally for lending us their money. "Utang na loob" in Tagalog, which to some people cannot be repaid. I hate being shackled with unpayable debt of gratitude. So I prefer loan companies. Once you pay it back, it's history. No indebtness.

Beware of Nice

Nice Pinoy houses, architecture and landscapes are always welcome. It's the Pinoy heart that we should design well--or re-design and renovate--or have it newly constructed.

There are a lot of nice people around, despite what people say about the world having lost compassion, becoming cold and all that. Though it's kinda like that--there's a terrible blight infecting good character in the world--yet, nice people still abound. Though sometimes, "nice" can be a scary thing.

It can be a camouflage masking the real condition or intent of the heart. In the bible, Laban tried to be nice to Jacob, Delilah to Samson, Saul to David, and so on. I can imagine how Judas tried to be nice to Jesus despite the way he must have hated Jesus' nonchalance for greatness, wealth, riches and money. Nice can be tricky and dangerous.

Good Kind of Nice

Being nice has different types and levels. The good kind is when you're exercising patience and perseverance. You don't scowl when you're being patient. You smile and be nice and really keep your cool. Or at least you look unaffected. Frowning or grimacing while trying to control your anger outburst is not patience. It's rage boxed in, ready to be unboxed anytime, which I often have 😂. But thank GOD the box is firm.

I imagine Jesus being nice and smiling with Judas, despite the kind of character Judas had, very unlike the way some Jesus films portray him to be, always mad, stressed out, sad, frustrated and troubled. And that's how a lot of pastor are, especially behind the pulpit--always angry. How you see Jesus is how you live your life. No wonder a lot of them are on maintenance meds. Deadly overstress is not God's will.

Nope. I see Jesus as a happy, easy-going guy, relaxed, unbothered by things men in his time burdened themselves with, especially religious folks who kept telling people to sacrifice and punich themselves working hard for God, like the Pharisees and law teachers. I can imagine how they looked everyday, and behind the pulpit.

Jesus was especially nice to helpless or hapless people, those who had no way of repaying him back. I can easily see him smiling and patient with them. With the rich, proud and religious? Well, he probably smirked.

Jesus said he never did anything except what he saw his Father doing. That made everything very simple and easy. After all you cannot invite people to come to you and rest if you yourself are perpetually overstresssed, pressured, moody, hot-headed, preoccupied and constantly stressed out and pressured looking for things to make happen for God. Jesus simply waited on the Father, always waiting before Him.

He grew up before HIM... [Isaiah 53.2]

I believe he just smiled at problems. One time, Peter must have looked stressed out about paying the temple tax. Jesus simply told him to go out and enjoy fishing. I can easily see Jesus smiling and calm when he said this. And when Jesus tells you to relax and take it easy like that, it's going to be supernatural.

Well, he had times of impatience and frustrations, even depression, sometimes pissed off by the spiritual shallowness of those around him. The NIV quoted him as saying, "Are you so dull?" when the disciples didn't understand that what went out of the heart was what defiles people, not what they ate. Another instance was his rage at the temple money changers.

But I see Jesus as someone who'd rather smile away at petty, foolish problems rather than get affected by every wrong thing that happened. I've seen pastors and superintendents get so upset and moody when the program didn't turn out as expected, or angry because of a low tithe and offering turnout--or when members didn't go to church. Jesus wasn't like that. Scripture depicts God as not easily angered, and the love chapter tells Corinthian believers how God's love is "not easily angered," [1 Corinthians 13.4-8].
But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness." [Psalm 86.15]

These passages alone should give us a good, even accurate picture, of how Jesus was as he dealt with every day life--cool, nice and smiling, oozing with Holy Spirit patience and self-control.

Hidden-Agenda Nice

I suppose this sounds familiar. I mean, every housePinoy in this country is wary when someone sends them a PM asking how they are, because right after that is a request to borrow money. That's the kind of nice with ulterior motives. I'm not saying it's wrong but it's sometimes tricky and a trap. Some people do have legit money issues and are shy to open up. But their desperate situation makes them try anyway, and force themselves to borrow money. They try to be polite and nice because they're not used to borrowing money and do not want to give the impression that they're used to it.

But the dangerous kind of nice is when people use it to draw information from you for leveraging later against you or other people--like how Delilah acted nicely towards Samson to draw out his secret. It often happens in office politics, neighborhood gossip politics, housePinoy politics, even church politics---or ESPECIALLY church politics. That's how some folks see that knowledge is power.

Hyperlink Nice

Hyperlink nice is a cousin of hidden-agenda nice. Some nice people treat you well because they need some favors from you, nt just infos, particularly financial. They seem to be caring and loving towards you, and I always put my guards up when people overdo this. I smell something fishy hidden somewhere, foreboding ill. Sadly, I see this from other fellow pastors, treating moneyed folks better than they treat ordinary people, especially the moneyless. If you're not rich, some people may see you as a bridge to a treasure--you're a conduit, or link--and befriend you to tap to a source connected to you, like a moneyed friend or relative. It's how a hyperlink works. The link itself is not the goal, but they need to click (or tap gently) on it to get to the goal.

Vote-Buying Nice

The first thing that comes to mind is a politician being nice so he can buy your vote during an election. Not just that. A lot of nonpoliticians are rulers. They are bosses, leaders, supervisors, masters, landlords, and what-have-you who make you their avid fan and audience. They are nice to you (and care for you) only because they expect your loyalty, applause, awe and vote. Or, the other way around--if you give them your vote of confidence, they will be nice and caring to you, and have high regard. If you don't, they treat you as insignificant, antagonistic, traitor, no good, weak, dumb or trash. That's how a lot of church denominations are.

Mekus-Mekus Nice

It's like this. Some people who started out with the good kind of nice sometimes go down one or two levels and become low-grade nice--sometimes worse--until they end up being not so nice. There's only one reason for this--the self. Getting too preoccupied with the self takes on all kinds of nice masks except the good kind of nice--except the Jesus kind of nice.

The good news is that, bad kinds of nice can also upgrade into the Jesus kind of nice. I've seen lots of nice people with selfish motives gradually transform and develop into the nice, nicer, nicest kind of nice. There are two reasons for this--earthly wisdom that comes with age, and wisdom from God accompanied by a radical transformation in Christ (a total intellectual turnaround).

Age-wise nice is the result of doing the wrong things over again until you finally learn (often from painful lessons) and avoid the wrong things and not suffer harm again. This comes at an advanced age, very seldom at a young age. This explains why people stop vices at an old age, not because they've come to hate them, but because illnesses and suffering have made them stop. They're wise enough to know it will make them suffer again. In church, this is mistaken as "maturity" or "spiritual growth." 👀

Radical nice comes from knowing and surrendering your life to Jesus. Initially, your nice attitude is nothing but a front to make people believe you have good intentions and keep their guards down. It's all a show, a manipulation. But later, a crisis happens that leaves you with no option but to turn fully to Jesus (only in Christ is a genuine good kind of nice possible).

Admittedly, a lot of folks who claim to be in Christ still have all kinds of wrong motives for being nice to people. Because it's all just a claim--and it's easy to claim anything. You will find a lot of people in church nice to you if you're a visitor there, for instance, because they want you to sign up for membership. And a big membership means more income for the church. Jesus never did that. He never feigned being nice just to get them to sign up. He simply said, those who have ears to hear let them hear. Simply put, if you want to follow, follow. If not, then don't.

I don't see Jesus as a nice guy. He's Godly.

Jesus said, "Birds have nests, foxes have holes, but I don't have a nice place to offer you," or something like that. Imagine having a ministry without offering a nice church building and facilities (or sound system and musical instruments). That wasn't nice. But these are the things that ministries today offer people because they want to look nice. They offer anything but the real presence of Jesus. If Jesus is all you can offer, that isn't nice to them at all. You have to offer more--nice building, facilities, preaching, singing, music, sound system, programs, activities, etc. Jesus is not enough to them.

Building your family (your home or what I call housePinoy) includes training up your kids to desire the Jesus kind of nice for themselves and filling your heart with it as well. It also involves having a sharp discernment for other types of nice and bewaring of them.

Workout Saga of a Pinoy Home Blogger in Summer

Summer is the time to start being fit and healthy. That was the thought that crossed my mind in high school when I decided to start my simple calisthenics. I started with stretching, running and pull-ups.

But fitness and health choose no particular time to be started. Start anytime. START NOW! Back in high school (first year) I had already been training in karate as a brown belt, mentored by my blackbelt friend, Angie, who was a member of the Philippine Karate Association. He supervised me until I earned my blackbelt in fourth year high school. We sparred and he checked my kata forms.

I later figured that calisthenics were not enough to build a strong body and mind for karate. I started pull-ups and running. Later, I added push-ups and some weight training. With workout perseverance, I got an athletic fit that formed a nice, lean V-shape body that expanded my sides, resembling an angry cobra when flexed---or even when at rest. It was why I was given the alias "Cobra" when I joined Tau Gamma Phi in FEU as a solo batch.

In college, my workout project was to do 50 push-ups and 70 squats. When I did them in 4 sets, I did 200 push-ups a day and more than 400 squats a day. It was awesome, developing in me a strong determination, patience, will and confidence, besides toning my muscles, giving me stamina and muscle strength. Much later, these no-gym, no-equipment floor workouts gave me an incredible edge when I started with serious weight training at the home gym of my childhood friend, Arturo, or Thor, as I fondly call him. I developed muscles of a novice bodybuilder.

But that was short-lived. Life became a lot more busy when I married and had sons, and much later the busyness resulted to some strange illnesses that took away my strength physically and mentally. My doc said I was suffering from depression and anxiety. I had (and have) a very happy marriage and family life, with some usual small problems, of course, but nothing that would warrant a severe depressive emotion.

We all have bouts of depression and anxiety--even Jesus had them and the Psalmist--not to mention Job, but I could not figure out how my depression could trigger strange illnesses. All my medical tests had normal results, so even my doc was puzzled. She wanted to give me a small dosage of valium, but I didn't take it. I told the illnesses to get out!

You know what I did take? Long, continuous talk sessions with Jesus in quiet moments. I had these moments before the illness came, but this time I had them more intensely, probably as intense as Jacob's when he wrestled with God and didn't let go until God's angel touched his hip to give him a limp, and which changed his name to Israel.

I also had a name change, and more resolve to get out of the stupid situation and fight depression and anxiety that weren't supposed to be there. I was angry.

From being bed-ridden, I got out of the box and started working out again---starting with walking around our housePinoy to walking briskly around the yard, and then in the street, and then around the block. This period took months. After a year or two or so, I was back in business. Thank GOD, no more depression and anxiety related illness. From 3 push-ups a day, I progressed steadily to 30 and then 50 push-ups per set. And gradually, I returned to my weight training plus Filipino martial arts. I am able to lift weights again. I have normal complete blood test results, no maintenance meds, and normal vital signs. Normal everything at 64. Praise the LORD JESUS CHRIST!!!

The thing is to determine to start being fit and healthy NOW. It's never too late. I have my simple secrets to my kind of fitness that I share in my free e-book found below. The secrets won't turn your body into a Mr. Universe physique, but fit enough for your age, especially if you are my age. Mix the secrets with bible faith, prayer and a healthy diet (low carbs with intermittent fasting now and then) and you're on your way to a fitness just right for you.

You can do the workouts right inside your housePinoy. No need for gym equipment or membership, though which are also good if you want them. And don't forget to check with your medical doctor before you start anything. If he gives you a go signal with these fitness secrets, congratulations. But I'm sure your doc will approve at least 2 to 3 workout secrets in my e-book, especially brisk walking.
