Are Attics Practical?

The original design of attics is to use the space directly under high pitched roofs. High pitched roofs were used in western countries to protect houses from snow cave-ins. Recently, the incorporation of attics has become popular, and so with the concomitant high pitched roofs.

Is this practical in the Philippines?

Originally, what we're used to were houses on stilts. This was designed to protect residents from floods and wild animals at night. The space underneath, called "silong" in the vernacular, were used for storages, extra rooms, or a manger for farm animals and sledges.

However, with today's need for wiser space creation and utilization, the idea of an attic is fast becoming a practical option. High pitched roofs afford space underneath for extra rooms or storages, and the terrible heat from the roof is remedied by heat insulation. Houses with attics look lovely and make you feel like you're always on vacation in Baguio or Tagaytay.

Attics [often serving as small mezzanine or lofts] are often cheaper than a whole upper level construction, and it may serve as a preparation for the latter.
